๐Overview
Eisenmenger Syndrome describes a clinical state where a long-term, unrepaired congenital heart defect leads to permanent damage in the pulmonary blood vessels. This damage increases pressure in the lung arteries, which may eventually cause the direction of blood flow to reverse, moving from the right side of the heart to the left.
This reversal of blood flow allows oxygen-poor blood to enter the systemic circulation, often resulting in reduced oxygen levels throughout the body. The condition is categorized as a severe form of pulmonary arterial hypertension that is directly associated with underlying structural heart defects.
