Hashimoto's Thyroiditis
๐Overview
Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, also known as chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, occurs when the immune system produces antibodies that attack the thyroid gland. This autoimmune response leads to inflammation and a progressive decline in the gland's ability to produce essential hormones, a condition known as hypothyroidism.
This disorder is considered the most common cause of underactive thyroid function in areas with adequate iodine levels. It is frequently observed in middle-aged women, though it may develop in individuals of any age or gender.
