๐Overview
This condition results from an immune system response where antibodies disrupt the normal communication between nerves and muscles at the neuromuscular junction. By blocking or destroying receptor sites for neurotransmitters, these antibodies prevent muscles from contracting effectively.
The resulting muscle weakness typically fluctuates and may worsen with physical activity, primarily affecting skeletal muscles that control eye movement, facial expressions, and limb coordination. Clinical observation shows that this autoimmune process can occur in individuals of various ages and backgrounds.
